Frustration with Gatekeeping in Law Firms There's a disconnect between my view of a fulfilling legal career and the practices I observe at some firms. While some veteran lawyers continue practicing well into their retirement years, their approach can be frustrating. They seem hesitant to delegate tasks – be it a key deposition, crafting a brief, or even jury selection (voir dire). It's as if they believe they hold some secret key to success that can't be shared. This attitude can stifle the growth of younger lawyers. It's important for senior attorneys to mentor and empower the next generation, not hoard responsibilities. A Call for Mentorship and Growth Perhaps a shift in perspective is needed. Senior lawyers should consider finding more fulfilling ways to contribute beyond just billable hours. Mentoring younger associates and fostering a collaborative environment could be a more rewarding use of their experience.
